Tournament Poker Chips
You may or may not have seen or played with the casino poker chips, but you are probably aware of the chips they use and their value. You can assign any number to the chips you use at home, but the case is different when the stakes are high, and the game takes place outside the four walls of your home. Therefore, you need to understand the difference between poker chips and poker chips used for tournament poker.
What are Tournament Poker Chips?
If you have ever seen a poker tournament, you will know how complicated it can look from afar. Simply put, Tournament poker chips are poker chips that you can use in tournaments. The only difference is the value of the chips you carry. The value differs depending on the colour they come in, and each player will be given a certain number of Tournament chips of a certain value beforehand. They come in a wide range of denominations; hence, you get too many options to choose from. The best (and perhaps worst for some) thing about poker tournaments is that you only lose the money that you bet. So you can just start with $50, and even if you end up losing that, you won't have many regrets. But if you win, winners take it like they always do.
Types of Tournament Poker Chips
Tournament poker chips are no different than poker chips, but the fixed limit for the game makes it more interesting. Well, just like any other poker chip, you have the same options to choose from when it comes to Tournament Poker chips:
Plastic Poker Chips For Tournaments
One of the common types of poker chips you may or may not find in the tournament are poker chips made from plastic. Although these are cheaper and look like any other poker chips, they are not common in poker tournaments.
Compound Clay Poker Chips
Now, composite clay poker chips are the most widely used poker chips in tournaments. From the ringing sound to the smooth finish and design, these poker chips are the ones everyone falls in love with at first sight. These chips weigh only 11.5 grams each, which will fuel the competitive feeling of poker and tournament. Hence, the composite clay poker chips are undeniably the best that you should be prepared to get.
Custom poker chips
Finally, we talk about custom-made Tournament Poker chips. If you have the specific design in mind, try to customize the poker chips that you will use in the tournament. There is a wide range of options you can choose from when designing your tournament poker chips. These types of chips are widely used in casinos to prevent fraud and ensure a fair game.
What are Poker Chips Values used in Tournaments?
It depends on the host, and the level of blinds players are out to play. If you are planning for 5 to 6 blinds levels, it is better to go for at least four colours, usually red, white, green, and black.
And, of course, if you are the host of the game, you can follow the poker value system to play fair. Here is the list of colours and their value for the tournament chips used for the fair game of poker:
Red - $25
White - $100
Green - $500
Black - $1,000
Pink - $5,000
A word of warning, this will work best for the tournament with 30 people. Once the game goes higher in stakes, bring back the smaller value poker chips like the red ones and designate them for the higher stakes. Or, you can just use something else for the higher stakes or have an extra set of tournament chips of a different colour to add later.
How many poker chips do you need for a poker tournament?
You will be given a certain number of poker chips once the tournament starts. No tournament chips will be added or deducted, nor will you be allowed to leave the game halfway through.
You will be paid according to the position in which you finished the tournament. This is because tournaments are where the winner, in a sense, gets everything. But depending on the format you are playing, you may even have the buy-in to the tournament if it is stated in advance. However, most of the time, once you lose all the chips you had, you will be out of the tournament and cannot get yourself back. Now let's talk about how many poker chips you need before you start the tournament. When you run a tournament, you need to prepare a certain number of poker chips or tournament chips. Each player should have at least 50 to 75 poker chips when they start the game. So, if it is a game of 20 people, go for 1000 to 1500 poker chips. You must have the poker chips of the right colour mix otherwise you will spoil the game for the players.
